State economist is keynote speaker for Perham economic development meeting

State economist Tom Stinson is the keynote speaker at the 13th Annual EDA Meeting Jan. 21, to be held from 1-5 p.m. at Mulligan's.

In his role as State Economist, Stinson is responsible for preparing revenue forecasts for the Governor and Legislature.

This is especially important this year, with projections of an additional $1.2 billion shortfall that needs to be dealt with by the Legislature. He will talk about the shortfall, as well as suggestions to avoid similar situations in the future. Stinson will also talk about the economic forecast for the state of Minnesota.

Stinson has a reputation for "pulling no punches" in his presentations, so his discussion is expected to provide strong recommendations.

A panel discussion will follow Stinson's talk and will include five individuals working with or influenced by the state's budget struggles:

- Tom Stinson

- School Superintendent Tamara Uselman

- Perham City Manager Kelcey Klemm

- District 10 Senator Dan Skogen (DFL)

- District 10 B Representative Mark Murdock (Republican) (Murdock may have a scheduling conflict)

The meeting will be held in the afternoon this year. Previous EDA annual meetings have been in the morning. The day will include:

• Review of 2009 industrial, commercial, public and residential activity

• State Economist Stinson

• Panel discussion

Anybody with an interest in Perham business, or an interest in the state budget, is invited to the meeting. There is no charge.
