Bongards' Creameries wins UMDIA cheese contest

The Upper Midwest Dairy Industry Association (UMDIA) coordinates four butter and cheese contests annually to provide an opportunity for butter and cheese makers to showcase their skills, as well as providing them with valuable information on how to improve their product, all through friendly competition.

Forty-five entries were received in the four divisions for the 2010 Spring Contest. The top finishers in each category are as follows:

The winner of the Butter Division was Ronald Rodewald from AMPI-New Ulm, Minn. with a score of 99.33.

The 40-pound Cheddar Block winner was Ross Vettleson of Bongards' Creameries in Perham with a score of 98.33. Mr. Vettleson also topped the Cheddar Barrel competition with his entry that scored 98.17.

The winner of the Miscellaneous category was Terry Simon from Bongards' Creameries in Norwood, Minn. with his entry of Processed Buffalo Bleu, scoring a 98.17.

Awards for all contests will be awarded during the UMDIA annual conference September 14-15 at the Holiday Inn in St. Cloud.
