Perham's InStyle Salon to give haircuts to benefit Locks of Love

For those who have let their hair grow long and need to get a haircut, Saturday, Feb. 12 is the perfect opportunity to contribute to a good cause.

On that day, Miss Heart of the Lakes Kalli Randall will be teaming up with InStyle Salon and Spa stylist Missy Lubitz from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to give haircuts for Locks of Love.

Haircuts from Randall or Lubitz will be free for anyone donating 10 inches of hair or more.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that creates wigs for children ages 6-18 that suffer from hair loss.

According to the organization's website, the mission of Locks of Love is "to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children."

Hair donated at InStyle Salon will then be sent to Locks of Love to be made into wigs. Wigs take anywhere from six to 10 ponytails - about 10 inches each - to make.

The idea to hold the organized event came from Randall, who is running on the platform of raising awareness for Locks of Love and hair loss in children.

Randall said that her goal is to collect 1,000 inches of hair that she can donate to Locks of Love. About 100 ponytails can be made from 1,000 inches of hair, Randall said.

Randall works as a stylist in the Brainerd, Minn. area, and since August she has collected about 23 ponytails that she can donate.

Randall said she wanted to run on the platform of Locks of Love because as a stylist, she has seen firsthand children that suffer from hair loss.

"I want to be out there raising awareness and helping those children feel better about themselves," she said.

According to Lubitz, this is the first organized event in Perham to benefit Locks of Love.

Lubitz gives about five haircuts a year to customers who have 10 inches or more of hair and want to donate, she said.

"The majority of people I see who donate their hair are children," Lubitz said, "and they understand that their hair is going to a great cause."
