Upcoming events discussed at Civic and Commerce meeting

Several upcoming events in New York Mills were discussed at the regular monthly meeting of the Civic and Commerce Association.

The future of the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which is scheduled for April 23, is somewhat uncertain. According to C and C President Nate Welte, the C and C was approached by organizers of the NY Mills royalty, who currently run the event, and asked if the C and C could take over organization of the event. Welte said that the C and C didn't want to take on the responsibility of the event.

NY Mills Superintendent Todd Cameron said that perhaps the hunt could be organized by school community service organizations.

The C and C heard a brief presentation on a possible expansion of the number of teams for the Lund Mania fishing tournament, although planning for the event is still at an early stage.

Julie Adams of the NY Mills Public Library told the C and C that registered vendors for the trade show, scheduled for March 19 at the high school, are down this year.

Including businesses that have not yet registered but have expressed interest, there are 52 vendors registered for this year, Adams said. Last year there were 71, she said.

Volunteers are also needed for the show, especially to help take down and clean up after the show ends at 2 p.m., she said.

The C and C also heard a presentation from Blake Groe, director of the NY Mills Marching Band. The band has been invited to participate in the July 4, 2012 parade in Washington D.C. Groe said there is discussion of including a second community bus to travel to Washington along with the band, but that details or costs have not been finalized.

Groe distributed a flier to the C and C that outlined the costs of buying new band equipment. Replacing all the equipment in a short time is probably not financially feasible, Groe said, but he hopes that within 10 years most instruments can be replaced. Groe said he hopes that the band will be able to purchase new uniforms in time for the July 4, 2012 parade.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 7 at 8 a.m. at the Eagles Café.
