Ghost Taxi to end services

Terrie Anderson, owner of Ghost Runner in Perham, has announced the discontinuation of her taxi service, which has had a presence in the area since June 1, 2005.

Ghost Runner will continue to provide its other services, specifically cleaning, errand services, grocery and meal pickup and delivery, courier services, long distance deliveries and eBay consignment sales.

"It was a very difficult decision to make because so many people rely on Ghost Taxi to get them around town as well as the outlying area," Anderson stated in a press release. "But this has actually been contemplated off and on for the past year-and-a-half, which is when we noticed the recession really affecting our area."

"People cut back on spending for vacations, entertainment, and even limited their visits to their lake cabins," Anderson added. "We thought it would turn around six months into this year, but it has not."

Anderson also cited a lack of enforcement of the taxi ordinance, rising operating costs and under-the-radar operation of other taxi businesses as reasons for the discontinuation of her taxi service.

"The cost of operating a legitimate taxi service is quite high, with the two key expenses being liability insurance and having to staff almost 24 hours a day, 363 days a year," she said. "The expenses don't change, and if ridership is down for a period of time, there comes a point when the tough decisions must be made."

Ghost Taxi's last day of service will be July 15.
