Authorities in Otter Tail county executed a large animal rescue mission just north of Perham on Friday.

Deputies got the search warrant that day, and ended up taking 11 neglected horses off the farmstead, some in better shape than others.

Authorities say the caretaker ignored previous suggestions and warnings, forcing deputies into action. Just in time, too - initially the rescue crew thought they might lose one horse.

Owner of Hightail Horse Ranch and Rescue in Hawley, Minn., Charlotte Tuhy, teamed up with law enforcement to help with the rescue effort. She says the horses were in a bare pasture with no grass and no feed. Some of the animals resorted to eating the trees.

"You can find situations where horses have been mishandled and mistreated and have problems trusting people, but we find that you can turn it around in a hurry almost every time," said Tuhy. "Treat them fairly and they respond."

Tuhy says rescuing horses is becoming more common this year at the horse sanctuary. All of the stables are full, as the farm is closing in on capacity.

That's likely because of the drought, she said, because there's not as much lush pasture and hay is twice as much as it was at this time last year. It's putting her non-profit in a bind.

"We have a waiting list of horses that need help, but we prioritize things like this because you have to," said Tuhy.

No charges were filed or arrests made Friday. Officers told WDAY that the investigation is ongoing.

At least the horses are now in good hands, with blankets for warmth and plenty of food and exercise.

Tuhy is now searching for people to foster or adopt these horses. To help, visit
