5-year-old hit getting off bus
A 5-year-old girl was kept in a hospital overnight for observation after she was hit getting off the school bus in Verndale Monday night.
According to the Verndale Police Department, a Wadena-Deer Creek school bus was dropping the girl off on Brown Street at 3:53 p.m. when she was hit. The bus driver had activated the amber flashing lights of the bus, then the red flashing lights with the stop arm. The girl then got off the bus and walked around the front of the vehicle, where she was hit by a car driven by a 90-year-old woman.
The girl sustained minor cuts and bruises, and was in observation at a local hospital. The driver of the car was not hurt.
The Minnesota State Patrol sent in a commercial vehicle inspector to examine the scene. The inspector discovered no violations and reported the school bus was working properly, the Verndale Police Department said. The accident is being investigated by the Verndale Police Department, Wadena County Sheriff's Office, Verndale Fire and Rescue and Minnesota State Patrol Commercial Vehicle division. Tri-County Ambulance assisted on the scene.
