8AA Baseball Playoffs: Yellowjackets demolish Nuggets 19-2
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon for baseball, with the new brick backstop showcased in sunlight, the No. 11-ranked Perham Yellowjackets demolished the Hawley Nuggets 19-2 in five innings.
"These guys came out today and really hit the ball," Perham Head Coach Hans Hanson said. "They were really fired up and that's what I'm looking for out of this team."
Hawley manufactured their only lead in the first inning when freshman Chad Clute doubled in Nick Bjorndahl.
Jesse Hein tied the game in the bottom of the first scoring Eric Brauch, who had doubled.
The score was 1-1 after one and it would never be close again.
Perham blew the game open with a seven-run second inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Ivan Nodsle.
Nodsle's dinger was the first of three in the game for Perham.
Gabe Pankonin hit his second homer in as many games, a two-run shot in the third inning with Dylan Ellingson aboard.
Mark Schumacher made his only plate appearance in the final home half with the bases loaded and jacked the first pitch he saw over the fence for a grand slam.
Nodsle and Schumacher led Perham with four RBI each. Schumacher got his with one swing; Nodsle hit a two-run shot, a sacrifice fly and walked with the bases juiced to earn his four.
Pankonin was 2-2 with three RBI, a two-run homer, a single and a walk.
Jesse Hein was 3-3 with two RBI. Hein also got the win pitching three innings. He allowed one earned run on two hits. Hein walked one and fanned five.
Ellingson pitched an inning on the mound. He allowed one earned run on two hits. He walked and struck out one batter.
Schumacher cleaned up the fifth inning walking two, striking out one in three outs of scoreless relief.
"We can pitch with a lot of teams, but we get our lineup, top to bottom, to start hitting like we did today, we're going to be tough," said Hanson.
"I don't know what it is," said Pankonin. "It must be what we're eating."
As a team, Perham had 14 hits and 17 RBI in only 28 at-bats.
All three Nugget pitchers ended their season with inflated earned run averages.
Josh Johnson, who pitched one-third of an inning, faced two batters, one being Schumacher. While all three men on the bases who scored on Schumacher's grand slam were charged to middle reliever Hunter Lawson, Schumacher's score alone put a 27 up in Johnsons's ERA column in the scorebook.
Lawson was tagged for 10 runs on only four hits. He walked five batters.
Clute started the game, made it two innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits. He walked one and fanned two.
Pankonin, Eric Brauch, Hein and J.T. Laughlin all had multi-hit games for Perham.
14 different Yellowjackets scored.
The recently announced Mid-State All-Conference team members from Perham made up the first five in the lineup: Pankonin, Stigman, Brauch, Hein and Laughlin.
"Good win for us," said Hanson. "We're deep; we're set up nice with our pitching rotation. I'm happy with our chances right now."
The Section 8AA double-elimination final four round switches locations to Park Rapids.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton played Saturday in Fergus Falls for the right to meet Perham in the first round of play.
"I want to play Fergus Falls," Pankonin said. "I want to beat 'em too."
Pankonin will get his wish as the Otters defeated the Rebels 12-3 at Legion Field.
The game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5 at 2 p.m., in Park Rapids.
In the other half of the section, Warroad got by East Grand Forks 2-1 in Warroad. They will face No. 20-2A Roseau. The Rams dispatched Crookston 10-0 in five innings.
