8AA semifinal matchup: Perham versus Waterville-Elysian-Morristown
The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers (29-2), from section 2, stand in the way of the Perham Yellowjackets' (29-1) first ever trip to the AA state championship basketball game.
The semifinal game will be played at Target Center, in downtown Minneapolis, Friday, March 25, at 8 p.m.
The Buccaneers are making their first trip to the state tournament since 2002. This is their third appearance. Ranked #7, just behind Perham at #6, the Bucs defeated their opponents by an average of 30 points this season. Junior Tate Harmon averages 16.3 points per game and senior Jordan Gregor adds 7.5 rebounds per game.
Gregor is the all-time rebounder for the Bucs.
The Yellowjackets are making their debut appearance at state in the midst of an incredible run to the tournament. They outscore their opponents by 26.1 points per game and shoot 47.5 percent from the field.
Senior Nick Tobkin averages 12.4 points per game and junior Mark Schumacher grabs 8.2 rebounds per game.
W-E-M defeated Zimmerman in the opening round, 61-58. Zimmerman was unable to nail a three-pointer to tie in the waning seconds. Perham, with Zach Gabbard court-side, thumped Virginia, 57-40, to advance. The Yellowjackets never trailed in their opening round game.
Should Perham be victorious, the state championship game will be played at Target Center, Saturday, March 26, at 2 p.m. A loss sends them to the consolation game scheduled for Saturday, at Gangelhoff Center, on the campus of Concordia University-St. Paul. Tip-off time for the consolation game has yet to be determined.
