With a 3.97 grade point average, the Perham High School senior has been a "respected leader" and a "role model to her teammates," wrote Perham Cross-Country Coach Jeff Morris, who has coached her for six years.

McClellan has taken AP classes, and also took a college-level MSCTC public speaking course. She has been on Perham's competitive speech team for the past four years. She earned trips to the Section speech contest the past two years.

In music, she was in band for four years, and earned a superior rating at music contest. She is now in choir.

"I have never known a more humble student athlete," wrote Morris in his nomination.

He said she has developed "into the kind of role model for our school community that our culture desperately needs."

The award was presented Feb. 5, at the Region 6A AAA Awards Luncheon in Fergus Falls.

As an AAA candidate, Maddie also wrote an essay, which was excerpted at the awards luncheon.

"I can't even begin to explain how much cross-country and track have affected my life...I've learned to be responsible, respectful and supportive through being a good teammate...I was part of two state champion 4 by 800 relay teams and took first in the 3,200 meter last spring. I'm passionate about all of the programs I've been involved in and I'm a better person because of them."
