Random boat inspections will again be taking place at Otter Tail County lakes this summer in an effort to help control the spread of aquatic invasive species.

The county’s Land and Resource Director, Bill Kalar, told the county board last week that four summer watercraft inspectors will work at public boat access locations in various parts of the county.

The county board approved a grant agreement with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. State dollars totaling $4,000 will be used to assist the county with salaries for the four summer employees.

“The DNR readily agrees to doing this,” said Kalar, “since data collected by the summer hires will be forwarded to state offices in St. Paul. This data is part of the ongoing effort to fight invasive species.”

The county board of commissioners, Otter Tail County Aquatic Invasive Species Task Force, lake associations and other entities, have worked together in prior years to provide information and to coordinate boat inspections at various public accesses at lakes all around the county.
