All Hi-10 Region 14C final goes to the DL Angels
NEW YORK MILLS -- Hi-10 West met Hi-10 East in the Region 14C final.
Detroit Lakes won all four of their Region playoff games including an 11-0 victory in seven innings over Hi-10 East champions, the Bertha Blazers, to take the championship.
DL outscored their opponents 36-8 in tournament play.
The Angels defeated their league nemeses from Bertha twice in the tournament.
The first victory was in the third round, a 9-7 win to propel the Angels to the final and send Bertha to the elimination bracket.
Bertha defeated Carlos 6-3 Saturday in the 5 p.m. game.
The Cougars played late into the night Friday to advance with an 8-7 victory to eliminate Perham in 10 innings.
Bertha played DL in the final immediately after Saturday's win over Carlos.
DL's Mark Gulseth was named the most valuable player of the tournament after smacking four home runs, including a grand slam in the title game.
Brock Johnson threw a complete game shutout and fanned 12 Braves to earn the victory.
The Angels receive a first round bye at the state tournament and will play the winner of Blue Earth and Chanhassen Saturday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Cloud at Joe Faber Stadium.
Bertha will face Maple Plain Saturday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The winner plays Cannon Falls in the 48-team, single elimination tournament.
