Former Gwinner, N.D., resident Allen C. Holmstrom, 82, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, July 10, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes.
Allen Curtis Holmstrom was born to Arthur and Martha (Schutt) Holmstrom on Feb. 3, 1926 in Gwinner, where he grew up and attended school. Allen served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was stationed in the South Pacific. Following his discharge from the Navy, he returned to North Dakota and attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton. He then worked on the construction of the Garrison Dam for a few years.
On Nov. 23, 1950, Allen married Birdie Golberg in Horace, N.D. They lived and raised their family in Gwinner, where Allen worked for Melroe Manufacturing for 33 years, retiring in 1982. Shortly after his retirement, they moved to Lake Sallie in Detroit Lakes.
Allen was very active in the Gwinner community, serving on the school board, the Gwinner Development Corporation and the Zion Lutheran Church Council. He was also a charter member of the Gwinner American Legion Post, the Volunteer Fire Department, and also worked with the Gwinner Police as a part time officer. He also played and managed Gwinner amateur baseball and basketball teams, and was an avid Minnesota Twins Fan.
Allen was a "jack of all trades" and enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with various projects and repairs.
Surviving Allen are his wife, Birdie Holmstrom of Detroit Lakes; one daughter, Sandy Holmstrom of Arthur, N.D.; two sons, Larry Holmstrom of Wyndmere, N.D., and Curtis (Brenda) Holmstrom of Arthur, N.D.; three granddaughters; two sisters, Helen (Art) Byanski of Tampa, Fla., and Martha Grimme of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant daughter, Gail; three brothers, Leon, Lawrence "Bud" and twin brother Alton Holmstrom; and one sister, Lorna Trystad.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes; there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, July 14, at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Dan C. Abrahams officiating.
Casket bearers will be Herb Reimer, Larry Grabanski, Tom Kohler and Jim Gooselaw. Burial will be at Gwinner Cemetery in Gwinner at 3 p.m. Monday, July 14.
