Alma Louise Borchardt of Minneapolis, and formerly of Wadena, passed away at the age of 95 on May 6 at her home in Minneapolis. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wadena with Pastor Damen Heitmann officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Alma was born to parents, John Henry Wiese and Mathilda Wilhelmina Wiese, in the rural family home in Pine Lake Township of Ottertail County, Minn., on Nov. 8, 1918. She was baptized as a child in the former Zion Evangelical Church in Perham. At the age of 13 she was confirmed in the same church with the Reverend Martin Paper on Sept. 11, 1932. She attended school in the Hill School, District 184 in Pine Lake Township. Alma was the youngest of eight children: four brothers, Henry, Julius, John and Arthur; and three sisters, Ida, Dora and Emma.

On June 2, 1942 Alma was united in matrimony to Robert F. Borchardt, the eldest son of the late Edward and Pearl (Biegler) Borchardt of Wadena. They had two children, Henrietta Elaine and Robert Alfred, and enjoyed 37 years of married life in Wadena, until Nov. 11, 1978 when Robert passed away due to an auto accident. Alma continued to reside in their home until October of 1995 when she sold her home and moved into Humphrey Manor East.

Alma continued her membership in Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ in Perham until the church closed and transferred her membership to First Congregational Church United of Christ in Wadena, on May 3, 1998, with the Reverend Ostlund doing the transfer.

On Oct. 24, 1998 her family hosted an open house for Alma's 80th birthday in the dining room of Humphrey Manor East, and her 90th birthday was celebrated by a family dinner on Nov. 8, 2008. Alma went to Minneapolis in 2010 to celebrate her 92nd birthday, stayed with her children for several months, and in 2011 gave up her apartment at Humphrey Manor to move into an apartment in the Minneapolis Augustana Apartment Complex. In September of 2011 she moved in the Augustana Care Suites residing there until April 2013 when she moved to a brand new apartment into Augustana Heritage Commons Thomas Feeney Manor. Alma celebrated her 95th birthday with her family and close friends, first by going to church, with the whole congregation singing Happy Birthday, followed by a luncheon in her honor. Alma resided at her apartment at Thomas Feeney Manor until her passing.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, parents and all of her siblings.

She is survived by her children, Henrietta (James) Smith of Minneapolis and Robert (Elizabeth) Borchardt of Circle Pines; along with her grandchildren, Theresa Lynne, Matthew Robert and Madeline Alice.
