Alvin Edwin Koplin 1919-2012

Alvin Edwin Koplin, 93, of Wadena, Minn., passed away on Dec. 12 at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena.

He was born on Nov. 14, 1919 in Stanton County, Neb., to William Karl and Anna (Krueger) Koplin. When Alvin was an infant, the Koplin family moved to a farm in rural Ottertail. He attended country school and farmed with his father. When Alvin was eight years old, he began playing the accordion and continued throughout his life playing with his band for dances, weddings and anniversary parties, and later by himself in nursing homes.

On Jan. 2, 1942 Alvin was united in marriage with Emma Kempf at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ottertail. Alvin and Emma made their home in rural Ottertail before moving into town where he was employed at the Ottertail Elevator. He enjoyed repairing radios in his home. In 1956, Alvin was hired at the New York Mills Bottling Company where he worked for a number of years. In 1971, Alvin and Emma purchased True's Grocery Store in Ottertail, renaming it Al & Em's Market. After retiring in 1979, Alvin concentrated on his music, volunteer-driving and was active in the Ottertail Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was also very active in St. John's Lutheran Church, holding offices of usher, elder, financial secretary and Sunday school superintendent. In 1993, Emma passed away after 51 wonderful years of marriage.

On July 22, 1994, Alvin married Evelyn Jackson at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. They traveled extensively until health issues kept them closer to home. Alvin loved spending time with his family as well as playing his accordion. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Preceding Alvin in death were his parents; wife, Emma; sister, Leola Ramsey; brothers, Arthur Koplin, Elmer (Sam) Koplin and infant brother, John.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Evelyn Koplin of Wadena; daughters, Aloma (Warren) Gullick of Ottertail and Annette (Kent) Poppinga of Verndale, Minn.; son, John Koplin of Fort Worth, Texas; stepdaughters, Pat (Bob Swicker) Nelson of Michigan and Teresa (Diane) Nelson of Massachusetts; stepson, David Nelson of Ohio; grandchildren, Clayton (Molly), Rebecca (Scott), Scott (Janet), Michael (Julie), Tami and Daniel; step-grandchildren, Esther (Michael), Max and Dylan; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Donny, Josephine and Isaac; step-great-grandchildren, Josh, Autumn and Caroline; brother-in law, Alfred Kempf of Ottertail; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 17, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ottertail, with the Rev. Dr. Karl Weber officiating. Pallbearers were Clayton Gullick, Daniel Koplin, Scott Poppinga, Michael Poppinga, Rebecca Poppinga and Scott Olson. Honorary pallbearers were Alfred Kempf, Gustav Koplin, Gail Ohlrogge, Marvin Koplin, Bill Koplin and Tom Koplin. Alvin was laid to rest in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Ottertail. Arrangements were with the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills. Tributes may be posted online at
