Amateur Baseball: Bluffton beats Millers in July 4 game
By Kevin Cederstrom
Long-standing tradition and a slice of Americana once again came together Saturday night for the Annual 4th of July baseball game at Russ Jacobson Field in New York Mills.
With burgers and brats on the grill, and beer on ice, an estimated crowd of 1,000-plus watched as the Bluffton Braves beat the New York Mills Millers, 11-4.
The Braves didn't wait until the post-game fireworks to light up the scoreboard. Taking advantage of a couple Millers defensive miscues the Braves scored five runs in the top of the first inning. Kurt Mursu delivered the big hit with a bases loaded single to score two.
The Millers answered in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Jason Burg led off the inning with a single. Number three hitter Alex Helmeke reached on an error and later scored with Burg on a fielder's choice and throwing error.
The Braves added two more runs in the second inning. Dustin Geiser hit a sacrifice fly to score Kyle Dykhoff and Wayne Dykhoff scored on a throwing error to put Bluffton up 7-2.
Mills scored one run in the fourth on a double by Chris Keskitalo driving home Trent Ament, who had singled.
Bluffton scored one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning.
The Millers scored four runs on six hits, with Burg going 2-5, but committed eight errors on defense. Bluffton scored 11 runs on nine hits.
