Amateur Baseball: 'Cats score early in 5-2 win over Perham
The Dent Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the first at Jake Wolford Field Sunday night and went on to beat the Perham Pirates, 5-2, in men's amateur baseball.
Dent's first three batters reached and scored off Pirate starter Eric Weller. A two-run double by Mac Stoll later in the inning made it 4-0.
The Pirates scored twice to cut the lead in half in the top of the second. Justin Berns brought in Mike Winjum wih the first run. Josh Hendrickx singled in Weller with the second.
Both Weller and Dent starter Brandon Fritz settled in after that. Weller went five innings with eight strike outs. He gave way to Aaron Ruther in the sixth, who pitched two shutout innings with two strike outs. Jonnie Schmitz had three strike outs in the eighth after staring the inning allowing a hit and a walk.
Fritz went the distance for the Wildcats, allowing just four hits with 10 strikeouts. Steve Branby was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI for Dent.
Dent rallies at W-DC
The day before, the Wildcats came back from a 4-1 hole in top of the ninth with two outs to beat the W-DC Shockers 5-4 on Saturday.
Fritz went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Matt Richter picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief work. he also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and RBI. Troy Schrupp was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Brock Collins was 1-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
Loon rally falls short
Hawley gout out to an early lead Saturday and held off a Vergas rally to beat the Loons, 8-7, on Saturday.
The Loons trailed 4-0 after five innings, but scored three in the top of the sixth to get back into the game. Hawley answered with four in the home half of the sixth, then held off a late Veras rally.
Josh Hoskins took the loss for Vergas going 5 2/3 innings. Kerry Lockrem was 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Loons. Garrett Dahlgren was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Jake Stoll was 2-for-5 with a double and RBI.
The Loons rebounded with an 11-1 win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Sunday in Vergas.
Vergas was up 4-0 after five before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth innings. They added two more in the seventh to end the game by 10-run rule.
Dahlgren pitched six innings for the win. Marcus Zitzow and A.J. Bunkowski were both 3-for-4. Zitzow drove in two runs and Bunkowski knocked in three. Andrew Lockrem was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Dent Bulldogs had a tough weekend, losing to Bertha, 30-6 in seven innings on Saturday, then falling to Bluffton on Sunday, 11-1 in seven innings.
