Amateur Baseball: Pirates win opener
By John George
Five shutout innings of relief by Eric Weller and some big days at the plate helped the Perham Pirates to an 11-6 win at Bertha on Saturday, May 16 in the HI-10 League opener for both teams.
Brad Ellingson singled and Andy Kratzke drove him in to give Perham a 1-0 lead in the first.
The two would figure in a lot of scoring for the Pirates. Ellingson, a junior on the Perham Yellowjacket baseball team, finished the day 4-for-6 with four runs scored, a double and an RBI. Kratzke, who just finished his sophomore season on the University of Mary (ND) baseball team, also went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.
After Bertha scored two in the fourth, the Pirates added to their lead in the fifth with Matt Schornack connecting on a two-out, two-run single to put Perham up 6-2.
Bertha rallied in the fifth off Pirate starter Tyler Doll. The Blaze scored four runs on four hits off Doll, who hadn't allowed a hit in the first three innings.
Weller entered the game in the fifth with no outs and a runner on first. He allowed just one hit and one walk over the final five innings to pick up the win.
Justin Berns drove in Ellingson in the sixth for what would prove to be the game winning run. The Pirates would add two runs in the eighth on a single by Travis Miller, and two more insurance runs in the ninth.
