Anna was born to Grover Oshgay and Nancy Stevens on Dec. 11, 1910 in Danbury, Wis. As an infant, she was adopted by Rev. James and Jane Rice. She came to the Ponsford area as a young woman, and harvested vegetables in the Fargo area. During her lifetime, she took great pride in taking care of her family.

Anna married Albert Basswood, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1997. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, providing gifts for her family, playing bingo, doing beadwork, sewing, puzzles, plastic canvas craft work, going to pow wows, watching her family play softball, watching "All Star Wrestling" and watching "Days of Our Lives," her favorite soap opera.

In 1998, Anna was recognized by the White Earth Tribal Council as the community's Outstanding Elder; in 2000, she was named the Pine Point Woman of the Year; and in 2005, she was named the MIEA Outstanding American Indian Elder of the Year. She walked over 100 miles in the Wisdom Steps walks and was a member of the Pine Point Elders Council.

Anna is survived by her children, Albert Basswood Jr., Delmar (Gina) Basswood, Doris Weaver, Margaret Basswood, Mary Lou Basswood, Patricia (Ed) Miller and Richinda Rock, all of Ponsford, and Debra Conklin of Detroit Lakes; a stepdaughter, Jenny Basswood of Mahnomen; 46 grandchildren; 109 great grandchildren; 53 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Bryan of Cass Lake, Minn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Albert, Anna was preceded in death by her sons, Maynard, Rolland and Richard Sr.; and a daughter, Rosetta.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25 at the Old Pine Point School in Ponsford, with the Rev. Michael Smith and George "Joe Bush" Fairbanks officiating.
