Area Memorial Day events
A traditional Memorial Day service with special music will be held at the Prairie Wind Middle School in Perham at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28.
The Perham VFW Post 4020, American Legion Post 61 and Ladies Auxiliary will host.
There will also be an all-you-can eat waffle and sausage breakfast at the school from 7 a.m. - noon, sponsored by the Perham Masonic Lodge. Cost is $7 in advance or $7.50 at the door. Children five and under eat free. Advance tickets are available at United community Bank, Mark's Fleet Supply, T.A. Gould Jeweler, Bremer Bank, the ITOW Veteran's Museum, Ma's Little Red Barn and American Family Insurance.
Following the service, there will be a dedication ceremony at noon of the new Perham Veterans Memorial at Perham Village Cemetery.
Also in honor of Memorial Day, the In Their Own Words Veterans Museum will offer free admission all day (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and kids under 16 will receive free flags.
NEW YORK MILLS
The Charles D. Center VFW Post 3289 and New York Mills Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a Memorial Day event at the NY Mills School Auditorium at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28.
The program will include music, advancement/retiring of the colors by the VFW Color Guard, a symbolic graveside service and placing of wreaths by the VFW Post 3289, and an invocation by Dale Frost.
Readings and songs will be presented as follows: Latham Hetland, "Memorial Day (a poem)"; choir members, "In Flanders Field"; Jennifer Koennicke, Memorial Day; Cindy Grothmann, "Freedom Isn't Free"; NY Mills Band, "Navy Hymn"; and Jackie Imsande, "Sleep Soldier Boy, Sleep."
The service is intended to honor all living and fallen veterans of war. It is a sacred program; all applause should be held until the end.
The Dent Veterans Memorial will be rededicated in a ceremony on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m.

9. Speaker Post 148 Commander Ray Masters.
10. God Bless America by Russ Kadow.
11. Guest speaker.
12. Guest speaker Past Commander SA.L. Evert Mostue.
13. Benediction by Chaplain Frank Wines.
14. Firing squad and playing of Taps.
15. Russ Kadow to play all service songs.
16. Retire colors.
On Sunday, May 27, the Women's Relief Corp will be remembering local veterans in a public program at 1:30 p.m. at the Richville Methodist Church.
Otter Tail County Veteran Service Officer Charlie Kampa will be the featured guest speaker.
The program will conclude at the Richville cemetery with a presentation by the Dent American Legion 148 Haimerl Post.
A luncheon will be available at the Richville Senior Center following the service.
