Arlette Fay Carlson

Arlette Fay Carlson, 69, of rural Ottertail and formerly of Henning, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Golden Living Center of rural Battle Lake after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1939, the daughter of Edgar Ewald and Louise Doris (Luhning) Brutlag. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of Ottertail where she attended Parochial School. Arlette graduated from Perham High School in 1957. She then resided in Minneapolis and was employed in the Durke Atwood Steno Pool and also in an insurance firm.

On Feb. 14, 1959, she married Fred "Fritz" Shaw in Minneapolis. The couple resided in various locations due to Fred's employment, including Mason City, Iowa, Minneapolis, Wisconsin, Grand Rapids, Bismarck and Mandan. Arlette was employed at the Blandin Paper Mill in Grand Rapids as a secretary. The couple were the parents of two children, Fred and Fayette. After Fritz died on May 27, 1977, the family returned to Henning.

On July 16, 1982, she married Larry W. Carlson at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Henning. The couple resided near Otter Tail Lake before building their home on Otter Tail Lake. Arlette was employed at the First National Bank of Ottertail as a teller, assistant cashier and office manager.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, served on the church board and auditing committee. She was also Ottertail City Clerk for 16 years and on the City Council for over 20 years. On Dec. 5, 2008, she was named Ottertail's Outstanding Citizen. 

Arlette was also a member of the Women's Financial Organization and the Red Hat Society. In the past, she worked with Duck's Unlimited, Turkey Federation, Ottertail Business Association, Smokin Iron Truck and Tractor Pull, Otter Fest, Otter Dazzle, Relay For Life and the Glendalough Park Fundraising.

Her hobbies included reading, hunting and fishing, along with a yearly trip to Canada, bowling leagues and the many tournaments with "the girls." She especially loved time spent with family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Fred; and a nephew, Robert Brutlag.

Survivors include her husband, Larry of rural Ottertail; two children, Fred (Julie) of Bemidji and Fayette of rural Henning; five grandchildren: Samantha, Jesse, Justin, Savannah and Tanner; four brothers: Kenneth (Viola) of Henning, Donald (Lucy) of St. Paul, Lowell (Audrey) of New Brighton and Ronald (Diane) of New Ulm along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 at Zion Lutheran Church of Amor with a public prayer service at 6:30 and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19 at Zion Lutheran Church with Revs. James Gronbeck and Dean Grier officiating. Interment will be held at Girard Cemetery of rural Henning.
