Arrest made in Alexandria homicide case -- Alexandria man arrested Friday afternoon
An Alexandria man was arrested Friday afternoon in the homicide case of Diane Fortenberry.
Jeffery Allen Brooks, 52, was arrested around noon after he left his home in Alexandria, according to Todd County Sheriff Peter Mikkelson.
He was arrested without incident by an agent from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and a Todd County Sheriff's deputy. He was booked in the Douglas County Jail and will be held at the Todd County Detention Center in Long Prairie.
The sheriff said Brooks likely faces second-degree murder charges for his alleged involvement in the killing and he'll make his first court appearance Tuesday.
On Friday, May 20, after her lunch break, Diane Fortenberry, 51, returned home and interrupted a burglary at her home, authorities said. She was assaulted and died from blunt force trauma injuries, according to preliminary autopsy results.
"We're very relieved that we were able to solve this," Mikkelson said. "But we're not done. We still have a lot to do."
Law enforcement had received hundreds of tips from the public during the last week and there were 15 to 20 investigators working on the case 24 hours a day, the sheriff said.
However, authorities are not releasing any further details of the crime at this time.
Sheriff Mikkelson said when he told the Fortenberry family about the arrest, they were "extremely relieved" and now they intend to focus on celebrating Diane's life.
