Beginning on Thursday, September 4, there will be a student meeting with play information and audition explanation, from 3:45 - 4:30 in the high school commons area.

Auditions for non-students and community members will be held the same day at 7 p.m. Auditions will include a short, 2-minute story / monologue and vocal auditions in the high school auditorium.

On Monday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., drama auditions and musical auditions will be held for students. They will present their story / monologue (1 to 2 minutes) and their prepared song.

The cast list will be posted at the high school at 11 a.m. on Sept. 9. The first cast meeting and rehearsal will be that night in high school auditorium from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Auditions will be simple and informal. Each person who auditions will be required to present a short story/ monologue about achieving a goal or dream in his or her life... or a story about a current pursuit of that goal or dream.

This story / monologue should be prepared in advance, and should last between 1 and 2 minutes. It may be true or fictional.

The director will be looking for vocal strength, stage presence, energy, and enthusiasm. The best "acting tool" is the face, so those auditioning are encouraged to be expressive.

There also may be a short interview with a few questions from the director. Along with the acting audition, the time commitments and responsibilities will be explained.

The musical audition will consist of vocal testing that will show range and skill. This is a musical, but some non-singers may be cast. It is necessary to prepare for the musical portion of the audition, and everyone who wants to be considered for the show must participate in the musical audition.

About the production

This well-known and loved musical is a story about Joseph, a father's favorite son, and his travels after he is sold by his jealous brothers. The action of the story goes full circle as the audience follows Joseph on his many adventures and as he eventually comes back to his family in a happy, loving ending.

The musical conveys many messages and themes, but two of the prominent ones are forgiveness and belief in oneself.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber / Tim Rice production originally had no dialogue and was under one hour in length. The Perham production changes the play somewhat by adding original dialogue and further developing the characters.

The dialogue will be created by improvisation of the actors and then incorporated into the show. This allows the entire cast to take ownership in the show because they created much of it and they remain on stage the whole time.

Perham has history with the musical

Perham has a fine tradition of musical theater and the community theater group produced this show in 1998, under the direction of Kevin Kosiak. It was an extremely successful production and played to sold-out performances. The new and original production lasts about two hours.

Rehearsals will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday each week, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. There will also be rehearsals Friday, Oct. 3, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and on one Saturday in November.
