Saturday games

New York Mills got down early and any attempt at a comeback fell short, as they lost 11-5 to Albany. Damon Tumberg was 2-4 at the plate and scored two runs.

Albany advances to Sunday's championship game to await the winner of NY Mills' next game. They will face the winner of Saturday night's elimination game between Dassel-Cokato and Minnetonka. The semi-finals will be played on Krueger Field Sunday at 11 a.m. The championship game(s) against Albany will begin at 1:30 p.m. Albany will have to be beaten twice to lose the title. The second game, if necessary, is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Perham lost two in a row to end their season. Minnetonka came out with big bats early and often sending 16 batters to the plate in the third inning of an 18-4 rout. The third inning made all the difference. Up to that point it was a manageable 3-1 Minnetonka lead at the end of two innings.

Friday late games

NY Mills pounded Perham 13-4 to advance in the winner's bracket of the state Babe Ruth tournament. Tucker Skoblik retired 10 straight Perham batters and Damon Tumberg held Perham at bay pitching the final two innings. Mills moves on to play the winner of Albay and D-G-F at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, on Krueger field. Perham will drop to the loser's bracket and face Minnetonka in an elimination on Krueger at 12:15 p.m.

Friday early games

In the District 2 tournament in NY Mills, the hosts beat Staples 7-5 behind a complete game on the mound from Tylor Patron. Daniel Kraft smacked a solo shot to get the scoring started for Mills. Kraft was 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBI. Austin Erickson was 2-4 with a run batted in. The win propels NY Mills to the state tournament regardless of the outcome of the subsequent game(s) against Park Rapids to wrap up District 2 play.

NY Mills faces Park Rapids tonight at 6 p.m. and has to win twice to take the District championship. A win tonight will force a game two tomorrow, tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. at Russ Jacobson Field. The state tournament will be held in Fergus Falls next week.

In second day loser's bracket play in Perham at the State 13 tourney, Minnetonka beat Melrose 13-3. Fergus Falls slipped by Bertha-Hewitt 8-7. The two teams are in the third inning at Matt's field with Minnetonka taking it to Fergus Falls 7-0.

In the bottom half of the loser's bracket, Crookston eliminated Dent. Dassel-Cokato took out Sauk Centre. D-C and Crookston are currently playing on Krueger.

The next update will be late this evening after the Detroit Lakes Angels and Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers amateur game scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Detroit Lakes.

Thursday Late Games:

The bracket is set after day one of State Championship baseball in Perham, highlighted by a local rematch of Perham versus New York Mills. The game will be played at 5:15 p.m. on Matt's Field.

Perham won a close battle with Dassel-Cokato, winning 4-3. Dylan Kruzel threw a complete game for the win and scored twice to lead the team. Ryan DeConcini scored and Cole Schmitz plated the winning run in the fifth on a past ball.

New York Mills won a scoring festival 17-14 on Matt's Field over Crookston. Down 8-0 at one point, Mills stormed back. Crookston would inch within a run in the fifth, 13-12, but four runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Micah Esala's two RBI single put the remaining runs up for Mills and they held on for the 17-14 win.

In other action, in the winner's bracket, Albany defeated Minnetonka 6-3 to remain undefeated. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton pounded Bertha-Hewitt 8-1 and will face Albany at 5:15 p.m., Friday, July 30 on Krueger Field.

The winner will play the winner of Perham and New York Mills to advance to the semi-finals.

In the loser's side of the bracket, 10 a.m. games are scheduled between Melrose and Minnetonka on Krueger and Fergus Falls plays Bertha-Hewitt on Matt's.

The 12:15 p.m. games feature Dent versus Crookston on Matt's and Sauk Centre and Dassel-Cokato at Krueger. The losers of these four games will be eliminated.

At the district tourney in New York Mills, the hosts defeated Bagley 5-3 behind the pitching of Perham draftee, C.J. Mulcahy's four-hitter. Park Rapids and Staples are playing Thursday evening. The loser will face NY Mills Friday, July 30, at 3 p.m. on Russ Jacobson Field in New York Mills. The title game is scheduled for 6 p.m. The winner of the Park Rapids-Staples matchup will be undefeated and have to be beaten twice in the finals.

State Tournament

Close games have been the theme for the majority of local teams in the early rounds of both the 13s state Babe Ruth Tournament in Perham and the 13-15 district Babe Ruth tournament in New York Mills.

At Krueger Field, Perham's Abe Bickell led off the sixth inning with a double and scored the game winner on a base hit by Adam Altstadt in the 3-2 win. Ryan DeConcini pitched a complete game for the win. He struck out five batters. Perham moves on to play Dassel on Krueger field in game eight at 4:45 p.m., later this afternoon.

At Matt's Field, NY Mills tallied a run in every inning but the sixth hanging onto a 6-4 win over Melrose. Damon Tumberg scored two runs and Dustin Gaudette got the win. Tucker Skoblik mopped up the final two batters for the save. NY Mills moves on to play Crookston at 4:45 p.m. today (Thursday, July 29) on Matt's Field.

Dent took it on the chin from Minnetonka to start off the tournament. Tonka blanked Dent 12-0.

In the other first round matchup, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton snuck by Sauk Centre 5-4. DGF meets Minnetonka in the second round.

The New York Mills 14-15 Babe Ruthers avoided elimination from the district tournament Thursday afternoon to keep their goal alive of winning the tourney and moving on to the state tournament in attempt to repeat as state champions.

NY Mills was down 13-6 to Vergas in the bottom of the seventh when they went on a nine run tear that included nine hits and two base on balls to take the lead 15-13.

Vergas came back strong in the top of the seventh with two runs off three hits, tying the game at 15.

Adam Patron dropped a walk-off, bloop single into right scoring C.J. Mulcahy in the bottom of the ninth to eliminate Vergas from the Tournament.

NY Mills plays again at 4 p.m. Thursday in the next round.
