Back to School days are here--open houses set a Heart of Lakes, St. Henry, St. Paul
With the Dent elementary school now closed, about 30 new students will be coming to the Heart of the Laikes Elementary school in Perham this fall.
Combined with 30 new registered students, the Perham elementary school will have 60 new kids, reported elementary Principal Kari Yates, at teh August 19 school board meeting.
Elementary numbers are promising, given the slipping enrollment most rural schools are facing. Last year, the total of new students was 15, so Perham is running about 15 ahead of last year and more enrollment is anticipated over the next two weeks.
Open huses will be hosted at Perham schools next week, including Heart of the Lakes, St. Paul's Lutheran and St. Henry's Catholic.
Perham and St. Henry's will be 4-6 p.m., Sept. 1. Perham school officials are urging parents and families to stay in town after the Tuesday open house, for a 6 p.m. school board meeting--which will include discussion of the levy referndum set for November.
St. Paul's will be Monday, Aug. 31, from 3:30 tdo 7 p.m.
With budget cuts, some classes in the Perham elementary school wil be up about 4-5 student per class, noted Yates.
"We're holding our breath as people walk in the door---hoping--especially in kindergarten and first grades," where numbers are high, she added. "Our teaching staff is phenomenal, and they are up to the task of teaching larger classes--but we are starting to get up there in class numbers."
At Prairie Wind Middle School, new student orientation will be at 3 p.m. on Sept. 1--followed by the 4-d6 p.m. open house, reported Principal Scott Bjerke.
At Perham High School, homecoming will be Sept. 25. The football team will be traveling the firsty two games of the season, with the home opener being Sept. 18.
The homevolleyball opener is Sept. 8.
The tennis home opener was slated August 27.
