Baseball: Pirates win DL tournament
DETROIT LAKES -- The Perham Pirates won the 2012 Detroit Lakes Tournament championship defeating the host Angels 13-6 Sunday in the seven-inning title game.
The Pirates scored in every inning but the first putting up crooked numbers in all but two of the six.
Taylor Doll pitched seven innings getting the win, striking out five and
Brad Ellingson was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Gavin Biegler was 3-4 with 3 runs. Tyler Doll was 4-4 2b, sac.
The Angels have had the Pirates number to say the least, having swept the
Pirates the last two years. The Pirates took little time getting on the
board knocking in three runs in the 2nd inning.
Pirates starter Taylor Doll calmed the storm by throwing strikes early and often. In the 3rd inning the Pirates got out of a jam. With a runner on 1st and one out, the Pirates turned a double play to end the inning. However, catcher's interference was called which gave the batter 1st base and made the situation 1st and 2nd with one out.
A walk would lead to the bases loaded with 1 out and the Angels top of the order up to bat.
With a 1-0 count Pirate catcher Brad Ellingson snapped a throw to 3rd
base, Gavin Biegler slapped the tag on for the 2nd out. Doll would get
a ground out to end the inning and the Pirates kept the Angels off the
The Pirates would keep on scoring and hustling and tallied a
total of 16 hits on top of 7 Angel errors to make the final score
Tyler Doll started and threw 3+ innings in the 6-5 victory over Mound. Doll gave up 2 earned runs leaving in a 2-2 game. Jonnie Schmitz came in
and pitched 3 innings giving up 3 runs making the score 5-2 Mound.
Going into the top of the 7th (last inning), the Pirates loaded the
bases with 0 outs and Tyler Doll hit a 2-run single to make the score
With runners on 1st and 2nd, Jesse Hein hit a ground ball, Doll
was forced out and 2nd and Hein beat the throw to 1st. The Pirates
would eventually tie the game on a passed ball, and Hein would scamper
to 3rd. With Hein on 3rd, Gavin Biegler ripped a single up the middle,
driving in the go-ahead run in.
Biegler would tool the mound in the bottom of the 7th, up by 1 run. The bottom of the 7th proved trickier than a 1-2-3 inning as the first 2 baserunners for Mound drew walks. The Pirates would get a much needed out, and with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out Mound drove a single passed the 2nd baseman and into right field.
With the game tying run rounding 3rd the Pirates right fielder Beau Bruhn made a perfect throw and the runner was out at home without a slide. Biegler would strike out the next batter looking to seal the deal.
