Battlers run away from Eagles
The New York Mills boys basketball team hosted undefeated Battle Lake and the Battlers used consistent play to run away from the Eagles in a 76-60 victory.
The loss drops New York Mills to 2-3, while Battle Lake improved to 4-0 on the young season.
The two teams traded baskets and the lead for much of the first half with New York Mills leading 14-12 early and 21-20 with just over six minutes remaining until halftime.
Tristan Huwe tied the game at 23 with five and a half minutes to go until half and on Zachary Wilkie's next basket the Battlers would take the lead and build on it for the remainder of the game.
Battle Lake led by six at halftime, 41-35.
The second half started with a battle of 44's. The first five baskets were scored by Nate Larson, of Battle Lake, and the Eagles' Spencer Imsande, both wearing 44 jerseys. Larson's final bucket of the string made the score 45-42 Battle Lake.
Imsande did all his scoring in the second half totaling eight points.
Adam Snelgrove led New York Mills with 19 points. Isaiah Bauck had 12 points on a tough night shooting.
Many of Bauck's shots flirted with the rim but refused to go down and frustration was evident on his face. Huwe scored 11 points.
New York Mills kept within six points for much of the second half.
A couple of sloppy possessions on offense allowed easy baskets and Battle Lake took advantage stretching the lead to nine with just under seven minutes to go.
The Battlers closed out the game from the free throw line as the Eagles were forced to foul to no avail.
