Benefit event scheduled for Zach Gabbard
A benefit event is scheduled for a Perham basketball player who collapsed during a game Jan. 20 and is now recovering from open heart surgery.
The spaghetti feed, silent auction and gun raffle for 17-year-old Zach Gabbard will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 27 at Mulligan's in Perham.
Donated items for the benefit may be mailed to Missy Graham, Zach Gabbard Benefit, 480 Coney St., Perham, MN 56573. Those who wish to donate cash or checks should make them payable to the Backcourt Club.
Gabbard's heart is "strong and functioning well," but he remains heavily sedated and in critical condition at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, according to a post Tuesday on his CaringBridge website. A biopsy was performed to find the cause of his collapse, but it "showed them nothing," the website stated.
A benefit fund also is set up to help defray Gabbard's medical costs. Donations can be made to "The Zach Gabbard Fund" at United Community Bank, 155 2nd St. SW, Perham, MN 56573.
