Bernice Sherwood, 68, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Bernice Duffney (known professionally as Babe Nelson) was born to George and Tillie (Soreng) Duffney on Aug. 5, 1939 in rural Rochert. She attended District 77 rural school and Detroit Lakes High School. She married Henry Nelson in Detroit Lakes in November 1956. Known as Babe Nelson, she sang in area nightclubs and ballrooms for 15 years. Henry preceded her in death.
Bernice married Charles Sherwood in 1972. He also preceded her in death. She worked for the Becker County Museum and for the Boys and Girls Club Thrift Store in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving Bernice are her daughter, Roxanne Rettig of Pillager, Minn.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (Joyce) Duffney of Detroit Lakes and Lloyd Duffney of Spencer, Iowa.
In addition to her husbands, Henry and Charles, Bernice she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Nelson, and her parents.
Friends may call between 5-7 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes and on Monday one hour prior to services.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, May 5 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home, with Chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating. Interment will take place in Egelund Lutheran Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes.
