Beseman 13th, Lockhart 12th at state track meet
Cassie Beseman and Miranda Lockhart, Perham's two entrants at the State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University, placed 13th and 12th, respectively.
The Perham track team is quite familiar with both Beseman's 3200m event and Lockhart's discus. The Yellowjackets had state champions in both events last season.
Beseman dropped 26 seconds off her best time in the 3200m run to place 13th overall with a time of 11:41.40.
"Cassie showed a lot of guts running with the best in the state through the first mile and ran very confidently throughout the race," Head Coach Mike Peterson said.
Beseman will be entering her senior year and will return next year for another shot at state in the 3200m run, along with leading the Perham girls cross-country team on another trip destined for the state meet.
Maddie McClellan, now a member of the North Dakota State University track and field team, was the 2010 state champion in the 3200-meter run.
Lockhart improved on each throw in the discus competition at the state meet and placed 12th overall with a throw of 107'2".
"Miranda got a good look at what it takes to place at the state meet," Peterson said. "Miranda is a sophomore with a lot of potential and ability that should propel her back to the state meet next year and beyond."
Hannah Steele, of Windom, threw 119-feet, 11-inches to win the event. In last year's state discus, Perham's Elisa Moenkedick took top honors with a huge throw of 140-feet, six-inches.
