Border West too strong for NY Mills in Section 6A finals
It was a disappointing finish to a fantastic season for the New York Mills wrestlers. The Eagles team season came to an end Saturday at the Mills Sports Center in a 47-19 loss to Border West in the Section 6A championship match.
The Eagles did take a 3-0 lead in the title match, after a 2-0 win by Shane Novak over No. 9 Gus McCarthy. But Border West won the next four matches to go up, 19-3.
Jordan Novak broke the Buccaneer run with a 18-5 major decision over Austin Grey at 135 pounds. That was followed by a good fight from Peter Stark at 140 pounds, but he came up short, losing 8-3.
Border West rolled after that, winning the five matches with three coming by fall. The Bucs secured the championship at 171 pounds, where a major decision win gave them an insurmountable 41-7 lead.
Mills finished the match with a pair of pins by Jarrod Norton at 215 pounds and Landyn Saewert at heavyweight.
Border West, a co-op of Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Herman-Norcross and Wheaton high schools, will be making their second trip to State. They went 0-2 at last year's tournament.
Mills advanced to the finals with a 54-16 win over No. 6 Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale in the semifinals earlier Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles stormed out of the gate, winning the first seven matches to go up 39-0. They finished the match with six pins, three coming in the first period.
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale had upset No. 3 Wadena-Deer Creek, 36-33, in the quarterfinals.
New York Mills will also host the Section 6A Individual Tournament at the Sports Center Feb. 26-27.
First round matches on Friday will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the semifinals scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wrestling will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the wrestleback round.
