ELY, Minn. -- All parties were brought to safety Thursday after a Boy Scout troop with eight people went into water when their canoes capsized in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

A source told the Duluth News Tribune that an initial distress call emanated from Canada. The Lake County Rescue Squad led a multi-agency evacuation of the troop from Basswood Lake. Several of those rescued had hypothermia. Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson did not make himself available for comment in the hours after the rescue.

The multi-agency rescue featured helicopters and used LaTourell’s Resort on Moose Lake, northeast of Ely, as its base of operations.

The original scanner call came in shortly after 4 p.m., and by 8:45 p.m., scanner reports were indicating everybody had been brought to safety.

It was not immediately known how many of the rescued parties were adults and how many were youths.

Winds had been gusting in the area, and were believed to have played a role in the capsizing of the canoes.
