Boys 4x800 team takes sixth to lead Perham state track team

SAINT PAUL, MINN. -- The boys 4x800 meter relay team brought back Perham's top finish at the Class A State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University Saturday, June 9.

Freshman Billy Beseman, sophomore Jayden Cullen, and juniors Nick Carignan and Dalton Dahms combined for a sixth place medal-earning finish in a time of 8:14.26.

The foursome earned four points and tallied the only score for members of the Perham boys team. The four points tied Perham with Stewartville and Prairie Seeds Academy for 54th place.

The team from Madelia/Truman won the event and were the only 4x800 foursome to break the eight-minute mark finishing in 7:58.14.

Ottertail Central's Luke Himmelspach, Taylor Moderow, Ryan Olson and DJ Cline finished fourth in 8:11.27.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton's quartet finished the race in 14th place.

Dahms finished the 800m preliminary run in 14th place in a time of 2:02.69 Friday. His time did not qualify for Saturday's finals.

Waseca freshman Shane Streich won the preliminary 800 in 1:57.25.

Streich finished second in the finals to Jason Montonye of Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley. Montonye's winning time was 1:57.99 to Streich's 1:58.51.

The field events all took place Friday. Eli Beachy vaulted 12-feet, three-inches to finish tied with Byron's Robert Mesenurg. Officially, Beachy's finish was listed as 12th place in the state pole vaulting competition. Mesenburg was awarded 11th. Blake's Grant Krieger, cleared 15-feet to win the title, his second straight.

Miranda Lockhart made her second consecutive appearance in state discus. Lockhart placed fifth in her flight throwing the discus 111-feet, three-inches. Her overall finish was 13th place

Sylvia Zanini, of Fulda, had the longest throw of 141-feet, one-inch.

The first event of Saturday's competition was the girls 4x800 meter relay.

Perham's team finished 15th out of 16 teams. Perham's team was a mix of underclassmen and graduated seniors.

Sevcnth-grader Brynnan Covington, and eighth-grader Sydney Karels, along with seniors, Cassie Beseman and Kelsey Kratzke, finished in a time of 10:03.18.

The team finished 32 seconds ahead of West Central Area in 16th place.

Watertwon-Mayer's foursome won the event in a time of 9:31.06.

Brady Speicher ran a 4:47.15 in the 1600m run (mile) to finish in 14th place. Specicher's time was 17 seconds off his qualifying section time.

Brandon Clark of Blake nipped three seconds off his qualifying time to win the title in 4:20.08.

State champions from around the region were: Ottertail Central's Steffan Stroh in the discus; Michael Whitney, of Breckenridge, won both the 100m dash (11.13), and the 200m dash (22.31).

Jaelin Beachy of Staples-Motley won the 100m hurdles in 15.04.

Pelican Rapids' Sommer Haugrud won the 200m dash in 25.73.

Fergus Falls senior Haylie Zenner drew a lot of attention after winning the 800m run. The win was her fourth 800m title.
