Pelican Rapids was ranked No. 2 but took over the top spot after Melrose (4-1) lost in overtime to No. 6-2A Litchfield 65-59 last Friday night. Litchfield has since moved up to No. 5. Melrose dropped to No. 6.

Undefeated Hawley (6-0) moves up to their highest ranking of the year at No. 3 giving the Heart O' Lakes Conference two of the three highest rated teams in 2A. St. Peter (5-1) is No. 2 and a school less than friendly with the Yellowjackets, thanks to the cross-country teams, St. Cloud Cathedral comes in at No. 4 undefeated at 6-0.

The Hawley Nuggets are on hiatus until a January 4 meeting with No. 8-1A Ulen-Hitterdal at home as part of a four-game home stand. Hawley will hit the road for two huge games at Perham (4-3) January 8 and back home to duke it out with Pelican Rapids January 11 for the top spot in the HOL and Section 8-2A.

Pelican Rapids has reeled off six straight victories after a season-opening loss to 3A Fergus Falls (4-3).

The Vikings face a stiff match-up with Class 4A Moorhead (4-2) at the Moorhead tournament Friday, Dec. 28. The winner will play either Cambridge-Isanti (2-5) or Roseville (6-0), both 4A schools, in Saturday's championship game.
