Boys basketball: Perham improves to 3-0
In three games, opponents have watched the defending state champions run away with the final score handily. This time the Crookston Pirates (1-1) made the long drive back north after a 59-33 defeat in Perham (3-0).
The Yellowjackets have outscored their opponents 185-109 in their trio of victories to open the season. The win keeps a streak of 22 consecutive victories going and their 34th win in the past 35 games.
That one loss and the team that gave it to them, Pelican Rapids, is looming one week away when the Class 2A #1-ranked Vikings and #2-ranked Yellowjackets square off in Perham.
Perham jumped out to an early lead over Crookston and just kept adding to it. The gap was 20 points at halftime, 34-14, allowing Perham to cruise in the second half to the 59-33 final.
Jordan Bruhn led all players in scoring with 19 points. Bruhn has done so in all three games this season, coming in averaging 23 points per game. He also had a team-high six assists and three steals.
Jordan Cresap continues to escalate his scoring. He pumped in 17 points, going three for five from long range and four of five from the field.
Mark Schumacher scored eight points from under the hoop and took his six-foot, seven-inch frame out to the three-point line where he made his only attempt to total 11 points scored
Josh Nordick, six points, made two of his three attempts from behind the arc, continuing a trend of being a deep go-to guy.
Brett Delage was the only Pirate in double figures with 11 points.
Perham faces the #5-3A school, St. Thomas Academy, Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2:45 p.m. in Minnetonka before a five-day break leading up to Friday, Dec. 16, and the match-up with Pelican Rapids.
The Vikings have backed up their top 2A ranking opening the season by defeating two 3A schools, both at home.
They defeated Fergus Falls 92-72 and Detroit Lakes 90-81 in double overtime. They host East Grand Forks in their third game tonight, Friday, Dec. 9. The following Friday game in Perham will be their first road game of the season.
