Boys Basketball: Perham takes out St. Thomas Academy
The Class 2A, No. 2 Perham Yellowjackets remain undefeated on the season, running their win streak to 23 games after defeating the St. Thomas Academy Cadets Saturday in Minnetonka 62-54.
Perham led by as many as 20 points in the second half.
The Cadets, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, could not stop Perham center Mark Schumacher, who finished with a game-high 20 points.
"We have started this season with some easier wins, but we sure learned about our team," Head Coach Dave Cresap said. "We still have a long ways to go offensively before we are going to challenge for a championship. We will need our younger players to really step and contribute as the season goes along."
The victory is the first of two games versus ranked teams in a week. The only team ranked higher in Class 2A, Pelican Rapids, will be in Perham Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m., for what will easily be the biggest game of the early season.
The game has gained momentum around the region and attendance is expected from out of the area, as well.
Crunch, the Timberwolves mascot, will make his annual visit to Perham, as well, to add to the fervor of the big game.
"The St. Thomas and Pelican games will be very tough challenges for us because both teams are so physical and are very good defensively," Cresap said. "We just need to go out and perform to the best of our abilities especially this early in the season. We want to continue to get better each game."
Jordan Cresap was a perfect 5-5 from the field and 2-4 from three to score 18 points. Mike Wiskow was also 5-5 scoring 10 points.
Thomas Sjoberg and Mitch Newburg led St. Thomas Academy with 11 points each.
