NEW YORK MILLS -- The duo of Josh Gilb and Dallas Ehrmantraut combined for 44 points to lead the Verndale Pirates past New York Mills 65-54 in Park Region Conference boys basketball action Tuesday.
The win propelled Verndale into a tie for first place in the conference at 3-1 with Bertha-Hewitt. New York Mills falls to 1-3, currently in sixth place in the PRC.
Verndale pulled away in the second half after a knotted halftime score at 33 points.
Gilb scored a game-high 23 points and Ehrmantraut scored 21 points, most of which came from making a living at the throw line. Ehrmantraut shot 16-19 from the line.
Ehrmantraut made no field goals in the second half but shot 15 times from the stripe.
Verndale, as a team, made four two's and one three in the second half, but made 27 free throw attempts.
Eric Blaha put three Pirates in double figures scoring 14 points.
The Eagles got consistent scoring from four players in double digits.
Damon Tumberg led New York Mills with 13 points. Ted Hendrickx scoored 12. Chance Pettow scored 11. Charlie Peeters finished with 10 points.
Neither team shot well from the field with both clubs around 30 percent.
Verndale won the game at the line with an obvious advantage making 27-41 compared to 15 of 28 for the Eagles.
