Boys Golf: Third place Yellowjackets advance to Section 8AA meet
PARK RAPIDS — The Perham boys golf team placed third behind Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes at the 8AA South subsection meet in Park Rapids at Headwaters Golf Course Wednesday.
All three teams advance to Monday’s Section 8AA golf meet at Longbow Golf Club in Walker.
Sophomore Eric Huus and junior Blake Kunza led the Yellowjackets carding a 78 and 80, respectively.
Fergus Falls' Chris Swenson was medalist shooting a five under 67 to win by six strokes over DL’s Michael Herzog.
Fergus Falls and the defending champion Lakers battled to within four strokes. Fergus Falls won the meet shooting 298 to Detroit Lakes’ 302. Perham qualified with a team score of 340.
Detroit Lakes has won Section 8AA the past four years, including state championships in 2011 and 2012, along with a state runner-up finish to Staples-Motley last season.
The last team to win the Section other than the Lakers was Roseau in 2009.
Wednesday’s win by the Otters was the second time Fergus Falls has beaten Detroit Lakes this year as the Otters continue to try to dethrone the defending champions.
Perham’s top six was rounded out by seniors Nick Bahls (89), Nate Bormann (93), freshman Ben Nelson (96) and newcomer to the varsity lineup Bryce Thompson, who also shot 96.
Huus was the only golfer not from Fergus Falls or DL to crack the top 10 individual results.
Perham has been led this year by Huus, Kunza, Bahls and Bormann, but have yet to play a meet with the entire team firing on all cylinders.
The Yellowjackets will need that to happen Monday to make a push at the Section title.
The top six golfers advancing to Sections as individuals not on the three qualifying teams were: Ryan Anderson of Barnesville (83), Noah Hendrickson (83), Gavin Mickelson (87), and Donald Wurdock (89) of UNC-Menahga. Breckenridge's Eric Conzemius and Barnesville Lynn LeNove shot 93 and advanced by winning a playoff.
