PERHAM — The No. 5A Perham gymnasts bounced right back from a tough loss at Becker putting up big scores to defeat Park Rapids Area 145.2 - 105.1.
With one meet to go before the Section 8A showdown, the Yellowjackets got an extra boost from freshman Carly Breitenfeldt who won her first all-around title of the year in her first full performance of the season.
Breitenfeldt had been out portions of last season with a leg injury and has been working her way back to full competition since. With injuries slowing other Perham gymnasts this year, Breitenfeldt’s return to full participation will be essential in defending the section title.
Breitenfeldt won with three scores of nine or better scoring a 9.0 on vault, a 9.6 on bars and a 9.4 on balance beam. She added an 8.75 on floor exercise.
Perham took the top four spots with Park Rapids' Amy Klein placing fifth all-around for the Panthers.
Perham’s Adrienne Meyer, also a freshman, was runner-up scoring nine or better in all four events (9.15-vault, 9.05-bars, 9.65-beam and 9.25-floor). Her 9.65 on balance beam was the high mark of the meet.
Sophomore Jordan Martinson finished in third place with a total score of 35.7.
Junior Alexis Peichel scored 34.6 to lock down fourth place.
Perham spread out the event wins with Martinson winning on vault, Breitenfeldt on bars, Meyer on beam and Martinson on floor showcasing a top-four team effort.
That effort will be important when Molly Lyngaas and the No. 4A Detroit Lakes Lakers come to Perham February 15 trying to take the section title from Yellowjacket hands for the first time in over a decade.
Though this year’s squad has plenty of experience, it remains one of the youngest teams of Perham’s streak with the top four all underclassmen.
Lone senior Montana Osterman scored an 8.6 on vault.
Ashley Hokanson, a seventh-grader, and Emily Martinson, an eighth-grader, also put up impressive numbers for Perham. Hokanson added an 8.7 on bars. Martinson scored a 8.95 on beam and a 9.1 on floor. Emily Martinson’s two scores were third best in both events.
Perham is on the road Saturday, Feb. 8 competing at the Minnetonka Invitational. The Section 8A Championships will be held at Prairie Wind Middle School Feb. 15 with competition beginning at 11 a.m.
