Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son

Bruce Allen Rice, 55, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, beginning at 11:00 am in Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, with Pastor Carl Noble officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dent, MN. Visitation will be 2 hours before the service.

Bruce was born November 3, 1953, to Hugh and Lois (Wahlstrom) Rice in Pelican Rapids, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids. Bruce attended grade school in District 108 in rural Vergas, MN, and graduated high school in 1971 from Pelican Rapids High School. He was married to Linda Berg and together they had two sons, Scott and a baby that died at birth. They later divorced. Bruce was an active member and officer with the Detroit Lakes Eagles, Arie 2342, serving as president from 2002-03. He made his career in sales; currently employed at Napa Auto Parts and Tesoros Big Daddy's Quick Stop, both in Detroit Lakes.

Bruce is survived by his son, Scott "Butch" (Mari) Rice, Frazee, MN; stepdaughter, Lisa Reyes, Pelican Rapids, MN; mother, Lois Rice, Perham, MN; sister, Susan Moses, Perham, MN; two brothers, Larry (Kathy) Rice, Vergas, MN; and Lee Rice, Hernando, MS; his dear companion and friend, Dorothy McDougall, Detroit Lakes, MN; special son, Mike McDougall, Detroit Lakes, MN; special daughter, Lori Wolfe, Grafton, WI; two aunts, Delores Chabin, Henderson, NV; and Della Rice, Clarkston, WA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Preceding Bruce in death is his father, Hugh; and an infant brother.
