Sometimes, having something to cuddle makes everything seem better for children who have seen or survived a scary incident, such as an accident or fire.

That’s the reasoning behind ‘Buddy Bears,’ a program that raises money to provide teddy bears to kids in crisis.

Through raffles and an organizational gambling account, the Detroit Lakes chapter of ABATE (American Bikers for Awareness Training and Education) raises funds for Buddy Bears.

Recently, the club donated bears to both the Perham and Ottertail fire departments. Now, when firefighters respond to a situation where kids are involved, they can offer the Buddy Bears as a source of comfort.

The Detroit Lakes ABATE has been donating Buddy Bears throughout the region for about the past 10 years, according to club member Edgar Burke. It had been four or five years since they’ve made a donation in the Perham area.

Burke said the Buddy Bears are a worthy venture, and the club enjoys being a part of it.

“If it helps the kids out, it’s worth doing,” he said.
