Callaway man accused of leading tribal officer on high-speed chase
DETROIT LAKES -- Billy Joe McDougall, 26, of 29477 County Road 34, Callaway has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
According to court records:
On about midnight on Aug. 8, a White Earth tribal police officer was patrolling westbound on County Road 34 when he saw a green Ford Probe go by him eastbound at a high rate of speed. He clocked him going 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The officer turned his squad car around to pursue and the Probe allegedly accelerated to 90 mph and took a sharp turn to the north, where the officer lost sight of it.
He used his squad car spotlight to try to find the Ford, and after he turned around to sweep the area once again, the Probe suddenly sped out of a ditch, leaving skid marks and a cloud of smoke in an effort to escape the officer.
The pursuit continued westbound on County Road 34 for about five more miles at speeds of 70-80 mph before it ended with the arrest of the driver -- allegedly McDougall.
He appeared Monday before district Judge Joe Evans, who set bail or bond at $5,000, and set his next court appearance for Sept. 14.
