Calvary launching 50th year celebration
2009-2010 will mark a milestone for Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham, and in the spirit of Christian giving, the church will be launching its 50th birthday year by helping others.
Calvary is seeking places for service projects on Oct. 11, Faith in Action Sunday.
Following a morning sending service, Calvary members will go into the community and assist individuals, families, groups or agencies with specific needs.
Needs may include yard work, roadside clean up, help with household chores, cemetery and park cleanups, sewing projects and visitations. About 35 identified sites are needed by September 15.
Faith in Action Sunday is part of Calvary Lutheran's yearlong Jubilee Celebration.
The official kick-off will be Sept. 27, with an old time potluck, duo piano concert and archive display.
In November, guest preachers will be speaking, starting with Rev. Cracia Grindal, a poet, hymn writer and seminary professor.
On Nov. 22, Rev. Gilthvedt will preach.
A Christmas Tea and Bake sale, with an emphasis on the 50th Jubilee will be hosted in December.
A number of souvenir items are being planned for the anniversary year, including a history book and oral history DVD. Jubilee Christmas ornaments and Christmas cards are also planned.
The Jubilee year festivities will culminate with a weekend celebration, July 24-25, with a barbecue, Christian country band, and a celebration banquet featuring former Calvary pastor, Dik Kennedy, as master of ceremonies and speaker.
