MOORHEAD - The criminal case against a Canadian man accused of nearly stabbing another man to death at a rest stop near here will proceed, the Clay County attorney said Monday.

The case against Harmit Bhangu, 32, was on hold after he was determined to be incompetent to stand trial.

But doctors have now determined that he is capable to assist with his defense, said Clay County Attorney Brian Melton.

Doctors also determined that Bhangu is mentally ill, but not dangerous, which Melton called "absurd."

"This is definitely not somebody we want in the community," Melton said.

Bhangu will be transported from the state hospital in St. Peter, Minn., to the Clay County Jail in Moorhead for a Wednesday hearing.
