Anderson finished behind Hellen Obiri, of Kenya (4:10.20). Obiri is the 2012 World Indoors champion in the 3000m and was third at the World Championships 1500m in Moscow last year.

According to a recap by, Obiri took control of this race with just over 600 meters remaining.

2014 is a non-championship season for U.S. distance runners. Grunewald mentions she may vary her race distances over the course of the season when World Championships and Olympic spots in the 1500m are not on the line. Grunewald also discusses the intense field of competition she typically runs in the 1500 for the United States.

"It's undeniable that the depth of American mid-distance running is incredible and unprecedented right now," she told Bush. "There are hardly any other women's 1500m teams tougher to make than ours here in the USA. Going into every US Champs, I'm aware of that fact. I think I am still maturing as a racer and learning how to execute a 1500m to my strengths in a championship setting.
