City garage site rezoned to Light Industrial

Another significant step has been taken in Perham’s plans for a new public works facility.

In order to make way for Barrel O’ Fun to buy and use the current public works site as a semi-truck parking/staging area, the city has rezoned the property from Open to Light Industrial.

The rezoning was recommended by the Perham Planning Commission, which held a public hearing on the matter on March 18.

No one either for or against the rezoning was present at the hearing, and no written comments were submitted. One local resident who is opposed to the rezoning spoke to City Manager Kelcey Klemm before the hearing. That conversation was not made public.

The rezoning was one of a few contingencies that had or have to be met before the city can move forward with construction of a new public works facility. Another important contingency, one which has not yet been resolved, is finding a suitable site for the new facility. After several meetings on the matter, city leaders are favoring a location referred to as ‘East Park,’ near Third Street NE and the Industrial Park.

The city and Barrel O’ Fun signed a tentative purchase agreement for the property in February. The current public works facility is located at the corner of Fifth Street NW and Lake Avenue, near Arvig Park and the Kowabunga Skate and Bike Park.
