With the school election less than three weeks away, it is time for our standard election year policy announcement on letters to the editor.

All letters to the editor pertaining to the Perham school levy question must be in by 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19.

Oct. 22 is the final edition for letters to the editor on the subject of the levy. This is a fairly standard practice in the newspaper field, intended to limit those 11th hour issues that are sometimes raised too late in the campaign process for proper rebuttal.

So please--email, fax or mail those letters so we receive them Monday.

Email: editor@eot.com

Fax: 218-346-5901

Mail: Box 288, Perham, MN 56573

Another plea: Please keep your letters to 300 words or less. We have never been as strict as most papers when it comes to the length of letters. We like to receive letters and we don't mind if people write a few extra paragraphs to illustrate their point. But please, people, keep them concise for this final deadline. Over the past several weeks, we allowed a few letter-writers (from both sides of the levy issue) extra length--probably against our better judgement. Of course, it inspired lengthy rebuttals, such as the letter on this page from Sandra Wieser-Matthews.

We will be opening up extra space in the paper if necessary, but still, we will be publishing on a "last one submitted, first one omitted" basis if we run out of space.

In other school and election-related matters, a list of judges was selected at the Oct. 7 school board meeting.

With only one precinct open on Nov. 3, at the Perham Community Center, judges will be staffed to 12 per shift. This will allow six at the registration tables, which should speed up the registration process.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voters can cast an absentee ballot in person, at the school district office, starting 30 days prior to election day.

This can be done on weekdays during business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition, the school is required to be open for absentee balloting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Saturday before the election and until 5 p.m. on the day before the election. The school district office is located at 200 Southeast Fifth Street, Perham, please use the front entrance of Perham High School.

A voter may have an absentee ballot sent, by completing an Absentee Ballot Application and returning it to the school district office by mail (Attention: Ballot request, Perham Dent Public School Business Office, 200 Southeast Fifth Street, Perham, MN 56573), fax (218-346-4506), or email (kwerner@perham.k12.mn.us).
