Coming up in August: Four free concerts in NY Mills
Perham Minnesota 222 2nd Avenue SE 56573

There will be four free concerts in New York Mills during the month of August.

Three of the concerts are being presented under the auspices of a grant from Lake Region Arts Council to the city of NY Mills.

These "from the deck" concerts will be presented in a new performance space being developed in back of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center.  Each will be held on a Sunday evening.

The first, on August 5 at 5 p.m., will be an energetic performance by Leo and Kathy Lara of songs of the Andes.  Leo plays the charango and many other stringed, flute, and percussion instruments.  The Laras include the audience in their music: anyone can play one of the multitude of rattles and shakers that make this music come to life.

The second concert, on August 12 at 5 p.m., will be a performance by Brothers Burn Mountain, a duo of electric guitar and drums playing blues-infused music.

"Swirling harmonies are set atop fast rhythms, drums are synced up or pulled perfectly away from guitar riffs - it's tight but not stiff, locked but not robotic. Seeing them play is definitely a hypnotic treat," said Brad Nelson in The Duluth Brews Tribune.

Then, on Friday, August 17, as a part of the Continental Divide Festival, Curtis and Loretta will perform during the Puppet Pageant at 7 p.m.  And the Cactus Blossoms five-piece country band will play at the City Hall Ballroom at 7:45 p.m.

City Pages named the Cactus Blossoms the Best Country Band in the Twin Cities in 2012.

This free concert was made possible in part by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature from the State's arts and cultural heritage fund.

The final free August concert will be held Sunday, August 26, again at 5 p.m. "off the deck" of the cultural center. This concert will feature jazz riffs and music of the islands by local band Motu.

Bring a lawn chair for the Sunday afternoon concerts, and for the Puppet Pageant, too.

There will be summer food fare available at each of the concerts.
