Community Builder: St. Paul's, St. Henry's offer option of parochial education
For area parents, there are certainly plenty of options in town when it comes to the early years of education. There's are public elementary schools, of course, but then two parochial options as well: St. Paul's Lutheran School and St. Henry's Area School, both in Perham.
At St. Paul's Lutheran School, Principal Bonnie Stohs said the school is entering the year with several new additions to the curriculum.
In addition to a new math series and textbooks, the school will also introduce a new religion series from Concordia Publishing. A new art curriculum called Arts Attack will teach students art history as well as encourage hands-on arts activity.
St. Paul's will hold an open house on Monday, Aug. 29 for preschool through sixth grade. There, families can do paperwork and pay tuition, Stohs said. The open house will go from 3:30-7 p.m.
All classrooms at St. Paul's have promethium boards, Stohs said, which are interactive white boards that the school has been using for three years.
St. Paul's students take part in many different activities throughout the year, including spelling bees, math contests, bible bowls, basketball, track meets and more.
Stohs said the school expects to have around 65 students this year, with another 25 to 30 in preschool. The school has five teachers, several paraprofessionals, and "some great volunteers," Stohs said.
"People are welcome to come have a look and see what we're all about," she added.

St. Henry's Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 30 from 4-6 p.m.
According to Principal Jason Smith, the school is hoping to institute more multimedia projectors in classrooms this year to bring more technology into the school's curriculum.
The school is also awaiting MCA results to see how students compared with other schools throughout the state.
St. Henry's has about 90 students in kindergarten through sixth grade, according to Smith. The school has one teacher per grade plus a music/computer teacher. Class sizes range from seven to 16 students.
