The Perham girls golf team put the finishing touches on an excellent year in the Heart O' Lakes conference doing what they have been doing all season: winning.

"You never know what can happen at sections," Head Coach Cory Solberg said. "We have a tough section but a good chance if things click."

The Yellowjackets outdistanced second-place Pelican Rapids by 10 points in conference standings and headed into south subsection play Thursday.

Both tournaments were held at Wildflower Golf Course. Perham would finish second to Detroit Lakes at subsections, advancing with the Lakers and Pelican Rapids to the section 8AA finals at Long Bow Golf Club in Walker, 9 a.m., on June 1.

The Lakers were six strokes better than Perham's 353. Holly Karkela led the way shooting an 82. Kaylan Huber shot an 88, both excellent scores at Wildflower.

Karkela's 82 was good for second place behind Medalist Matty Tschider, of DL, who carded an 80.

Other Perham scores: Rachel Nelson - 91; Becca Huebsch - 92; Ali Smith - 98; Kari Cavanagh - 99.

The Yellowjackets were the only team in subsection play that finished with all six members shooting under the century mark. It took three golfers in the 80's to balance out the lead team Lakers score.

In the final conference meet of the year on Tuesday, the usual suspects, Huber and Karkela, were all over the top individual standings, joined by Nelson.

Huber tied for second on the front nine shooting 44 with Pelican's Michaela Gray. Karkela tied for fourth one stroke back at 45.

On the back nine, Karkela would take third with a 46, Gray shot 47, along with Nelson.

In final HOL individual standings, Perham had six golfers in the top ten, all of whom were named all-conference.

Of the six, Cavanagh and Heubsch are seniors, Smith and Nelson are freshmen and the top two Karkela and Huber are juniors.
